SPORTSMANSHIP & FAIR PLAY

• Visiting team members, student and adult spectators are guests and are given the courtesy and consideration that a well-mannered host would give.
• The visitors in turn are to act as invited guests using the home school’s facilities with care while respecting the rules and customs of the home school.
• Officials are the proper authorities to make decisions regarding rules and their interpretations and decisions should be accepted.
• Spectators, student-athletes and coaches must recognize that their conduct play an important role in establishing the reputation of their school and that their actions can relate directly to the success of the team.
• Appropriate supervision will be provided for Southold home contests.
• Southold School’s Interscholastic Athletic Code and Code of Conduct must be adhered to by student-athletes at all times.

COACHES AND PARENTS CHECKLIST IN SPORTS

• Maintain a “Fun is #1” attitude.
• Treat others as you wish to be treated.
• Praise athletes for just participating, regardless of their athletic skills.
• Look for positives in athletes; avoid ridicule or sarcasm.
• Remain calm when mistakes happen, and help athletes learn form mistakes.
• Help athletes from getting down on themselves when things don’t go well.
• Don’t be obsessed with your involvement in sports.  There is a life after sports.
• Maintain a sense of humor.
• Emphasize teamwork in team sports; teach them to think “we” instead of “me.”
• Lead by setting a good example in sportsmanship: winning without gloating and losing without complaining.

SUFFOLK COUNTY SPECTATOR CODE OF ETHICS

• Spectators are an important part of the game and should at all times conform to accepted standards of good sportsmanship and behavior.
• Spectators should at all times respect officials, coaches and players as guests in the community and extend all courtesies to them.
• Enthusiastic and wholesome cheering is encouraged.
• Booing, stamping of the feet, and disrespectful remarks should be avoided.
• Bells, whistles, or noisemakers of any kind are acceptable and proper for outdoor athletic events, but not for indoor athletic activities
• During the free throw in basketball, there should be absolute quiet.
• Spectators should encourage all people to observe this league’s Code of Ethics.  Those who do not respond should be reported to the proper school authorities immediately.
• Spectators should observe and obey the rules and regulations of the school concerning smoking, food and soft drink consumption, use of lavatory facilities and parking of cars.
• New York State Law prohibits alcoholic beverages of any kind on school property; the law further prohibits any person under the influence of alcohol to be on school property.
• Spectators should respect and obey all school officials, marshals and police at all athletic contests.
• For flagrant or repeated violations of the Code, spectators will be evicted from the area.

NEW YOUR STATE PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION/SECTION XI
MISCONDUCT RULE

• Any member of a squad removed from a contest for poor sportsmanship conduct or a flagrant foul shall not participate in that sport in the next scheduled contest or in New York State Public High School Association tournament play.  Disqualifications from one season carry over to the next season of participation.

• Any member of the squad who strikes, shoves, kicks, or makes other physical contact with the intent to do so to an official shall be expelled form the game immediately and banned from further participation in all sports for one year from the date of the offense.  NOTE: a member of the squad includes coach, player, manager, scorekeepers, timers, statisticians.
•  
• A player or coach who has been suspended from play may not be present on the school grounds where the contest is played.  There is no appeal to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association/Section XI Misconduct Rule. The official’s rule is final and not subject to question.

NOTE:  The Southold School District reserves the right to impose additional consequences which may result in a longer suspension from contests and/or dismissal from the team by the coach or administration.
