With a commitment to promote the ideals of the larger American democracy, the mission of Southold Schools is to develop a Self-regulated, Self-motivated learner who knows how to effectively contribute independently and collectively to family, community, business and Society.
District Vision
Mindful of the knowledge, skills and habits of mind that students will need to be successful in the 21st century, Southold Board of Education, teachers, staff and administrators will:
- Work toward an understanding of carefully planned instructional units,methodology and assessments which highlight 21“ century skills (e.g., information literacy, critical thinking and problem solving, creativity, communication and collaboration) and result in the effective application of knowledge and skills for all students.
- Create a culture of inquiry. Refine the use of well-crafted questions and instructional routines that promote students’ intellectual engagement and foster a classroom and school-wide culture of inquiry.
- Highlight the integration of literacy, science, technology, engineering, mathematics and the arts in performance-based tasks that require students to identify and solve problems in innovative and creative ways.
- Engage the learning community in the study of social, local, and global issues in order to encourage the conservation of our common resources along with a respect for and appreciation of differences.
- Attend to the social and emotional well-being of all stakeholders within the learning community.
- Create a culture in which students become stakeholders in their community.
